This would have been on Sunday March 18th. It was walking through a property which, unfortunately, is quite overgrown and would therefore provide great cover for hunting. I don't know if it has decided that it likes the neighborhood or was just passing through. Hope it finds more suitable hunting in a more wooded area.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4963073063621506738.post-27384069304723190982018-01-17T21:01:55.449-05:002018-01-17T21:01:55.449-05:00My neighbor saw a bobcat running from the front of...My neighbor saw a bobcat running from the front of my house, as she pulled in this evening. I first caught the reflection of it's eyes in my headlamp and thought it was a house cat, which I've seen in the same area multiple times, or a racoon. It moved towards the trail I was using, which doesn't usually happen with cats, fox or raccoons. It then crossed the path ~20ft in front of me. It was clearly larger than either of those. Roughly 18" at the shoulders/back, thick legs, no tail. Definitely not house cat, racoon, or fox. Disappeared silently in the underbrush.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4963073063621506738.post-65830890808683903812017-10-20T01:29:20.571-04:002017-10-20T01:29:20.571-04:00I just saw a huge cat tonight while out with my do...I just saw a huge cat tonight while out with my dog. It was a few yards away so we stopped in the shadow to let it cross far ahead of us. I just moved here from PA and thought maybe it was a mountain lion so I googled it when I got home and apparently there haven't been cougars in this area for a little by time but it said possibly a bobcat. I couldn't be sure because it was around midnight and it was pretty dark but this cat was the size of my dog almost and he's a 60lb pit bull. He just stood silently and stared at it just as amazed as I was. First time I have seen one. It looked just like a wolf and was bigger than the foxes I have seen. We are in Woodlea Manor in Leesburg and our property backs onto a golf course. There is a very small wooded area between us and the golf course. It ran right into the middle of our lawn, stopped and looked around. I stepped away from the window for a couple of seconds to reach for my phone but it had already disappeared. Sound matched several recordings of coyote howls exactly (higher pitched, with scream-like howls), and a Google search for coyotes in Northern VA led here. No idea how many would have been howling, but it sounded like quite a few. This area has been building up townhouses the past year or so, I guess the cover of trees are no longer around. There are some established cat colonies here, so I'm assuming the coyote is scavenging easy food from people feeding the cats. Now I know why my dogs go nuts barking at night, about a week ago. Always during the day and many times quite near people. It use to have a hurt foot and was spotted several times walking on just three legs but I saw it again today around 11:30 am and it was walking fine. It worries me a little that it's out so often in the daytime and around people. I saw it for the first time, at the beginning of August, walking through my yard (likely coming from the creek or pond). We actually surprised one another when I was taking out the trash. It was around 7 pm and still very light out. We were about 20 feet apart when our paths crossed. The coyote stopped and looked at me for a bit and then went on its way. Very beautiful animal, but much larger (large German Shepard sized) than other coyotes I have seen before. I was was giving my dog a midday walk a couple of weeks ago (Thursday July 21) when a large Eastern Coyote ran right past me while I was on the asphalt path behind my house. It's gate was more of a relaxed lope. It didn't seem to be frightened of me other than altering its path slightly to avoid me. It came out of the bushes in front of me and only when it saw me did it veer away from us slightly. It ran along the back of the houses until it cleared them and slipped into the woods. It was very stealthy and I never heard it's footfalls as it ran past. Like a ghost.

I got a very clear look at it. It was taller than my pooch, leaner but very healthy looking with short fur. I would say between 60 and 70 pounds. It's face was broad and clearly very wolf-like.

Now today, one of my neighbors kids told me that he saw an adult and puppy munching on a squirrel a couple of evenings ago (he said about 6 PM)and that they went into the woods when they saw him.

Do you think that their population density is growing? If that is so, could that cause them to become aggressive towards humans as competition for food increases?

DarylAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4963073063621506738.post-33992215276768505732016-08-01T12:25:52.996-04:002016-08-01T12:25:52.996-04:00Brian, Not sure if this post is still monitored, b...Brian, Not sure if this post is still monitored, but we have them in Gainesville, VA.
